Advantages of Modular Cleanroom Construction

A modular cleanroom is an environmentally-controlled space where products are produced.  Manufacturers concerned with airborne particles know the benefits and purpose of cleanrooms. It is not an option; it is a requirement to ensure a product is safe for the consumer to purchase.  For this reason, we will explore the many advantages of a Starrco modular cleanroom.

Less Cost:

It’s no secret that modular cleanroom construction has a lower lifetime cost than conventional construction. First, conventional construction is permanent; making future modifications more difficult, pricey and disruptive to current operations. Second, material such as walls cannot be reused requiring new material and added labor, thus causing your budget to balloon. Also, several states offer tax incentives due to modular construction’s positive impacts on the environment.

Contamination Control:

As we mentioned earlier, it’s the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure the safety of their employees as well as the consumer.   The only way to control contamination is to administer the total environment. Air flow rates and direction, pressurization, temperature and specialized filtration all need to be closely monitored. There is more to a cleanroom than air filters. Modular cleanrooms are planned and manufactured using strict protocol and methods.

At Starrco, our cleanrooms feature interfacing walls, floors, ceilings and mechanical components that will provide a contaminant-free environment, effectively allowing control of air flow, pressure, temperature, humidity and filtration.

Less Time:

Modular cleanrooms reduce construction time by up to 40 percent through parallel construction while also greatly reducing the mess in post construction clean-up. Additionally, using modular components significantly reduces design, architecture and engineering time and associated costs. Also, since our material is pre-cut, mitered and completely finished, installation is completed in a timely manner; with minimal mess, dust and disruption.

Modular Cleanrooms: The Quick and Clean Solution

While you may never give thought to the air contamination in your workplace, the typical office contains 500,000 to 1,000,000 particles (0.5 microns or larger) per cubic foot of air. A Class 100 cleanroom, on the other hand, is designed to never allow over 100 particles per cubic foot of air. A human hair is 75-100 microns in diameter, but even a particle 200 times smaller can be a major disaster in a cleanroom.

Because a cleanroom is often the site of laboratories, medical device assembly, or animal housing, the carefully controlled environment is a necessary and important component. Contamination can lead to downtown and increased production costs. Many factors contribute to contamination, including the people and tools in any particular environment, but so too does the actual building itself. Before a cleanroom is even constructed, consideration must be given to the materials and method using in building it.

As a leader in the industry of modular office systems, Starrco is also experienced and knowledge in modular cleanroom systems. Knowing the importance of quality in the construction of cleanrooms, Starrco begins planning all of their modular buildings with a careful needs assessment. Is this a space for equipment enclosures or the aerospace industry? What are the size requirements? Each modular office is designed and engineered specifically for our client’s needs.

The materials in a modular building are pre-cut, mitered, and completely finished, so the installation is quick and does not create any mess to contaminate or disrupt your operation. All of the studs in Starrco modular cleanrooms are made to accommodate easy installation of electrical, data transmission and communications lines, accessible from a removable cover plate. Using modular systems can mean the difference between 500,000 particles and 100 particles.

Cleanroom Applications – Part 2

As mentioned in “Cleanroom Applications – Part 1”, we’d like to expand on the small preview we provided into the possible applications for our Starrco modular cleanrooms. As we’ve touched on before, modular cleanrooms are a way of the future for many industries… making it that much more important for potential customers to understand all of the possibilities for applying cleanrooms to their businesses.

The purpose of this post will be to describe three additional applications for modular cleanrooms. As mentioned in our last post, Starrco cleanrooms all share that they are pre-engineered for your specific solution and are the most cost-effective modular cleanroom environments available.

Here’s a breakdown of our three featured applications:

Sound/Equipment Enclosures

There are a variety of enclosures that need cleanroom capabilities. Many companies have to comply with government regulations and manufacturing standards that often require sound and contamination control. These types of requirements are consistently met by Starrco’s cleanrooms. In addition, our modular wall construction provides for a sound proof environment, another highly sought-after feature.

Equipment enclosures are another common application for modular cleanrooms. You’ll be able to provide outdoor or in-plant shelter for valuable, sensitive equipment from unfavorable contaminants. While protecting your equipment, your equipment enclosure still offers employees and surrounding personnel with an area to work comfortably.

CMM Rooms

A Coordinate Measuring Machine room, more commonly known as a CMM room, is an ideal application for a modular cleanroom. The real value in implementing a modular cleanroom for a CMM room is the ability to execute exact temperature stability. This is because Starrco CMM rooms are often used for situations involving extreme temperatures, such as casting molds of molten metal. As an added benefit, HVAC, filtration, thermal equipment and other features in modular cleanrooms allow for an environment free from any nearby material handling contaminants.

Wafer Fabrication Rooms

When it comes to the most intensive of manufacturing processes, semiconductor wafer fabrication for modular cleanrooms tops the charts. As most in the cleanroom industry are aware, wafer fabrication is a procedure composed of many repeated sequential processes to produce complete electrical circuits. Simply put, wafer fabrication involves many sensitive products, making it critical to construct modular cleanrooms with precisely measured components that help produce high yields.

When you look at the big picture, you’ll see that with a wide variety of applications for modular cleanrooms, your provider needs to be experienced in all of them.  With the six applications we’ve showcased, we at Starrco hope we’ve better prepared you as cleanroom-related business decisions arise.

Are there any other applications for modular cleanrooms that apply to your business?

Cleanroom Applications – Part 1

When the general public hears the term “modular cleanroom”, most would envision an enclosed room with workers dressed head-to-toe in white suits.  At Starrco, we understand that the majority of the population also wouldn’t know where to begin if asked to describe a modular cleanroom’s purpose.  But for many industries, the modular environment in question is incredibly important to the bottom-line.

A closer look into specific cleanroom applications shows that these contaminant-free spaces are being used far more than most of us ever would have imagined.  So, let’s explore some of the different cleanroom applications:

Compounding Pharmacies

One of the emerging modular cleanroom applications is for a compound pharmacy.  Since compound pharmacies prepare specialized drug products that require flexible conditions, their facilities need to be configured to meet specific design and functionality requirements.  A great fit for those requirements is a modular cleanroom from Starrco, which enables the compound pharmacy customers to prepare customized medicines to meet patient needs with ease.

How does this happen?  Through use of a myriad of advanced design and manufacturing methods, Starrco can meet some of the most complex stipulations. And in the changing pharmaceutical world, a facility solution that can keep up is invaluable.

Environmental Rooms

Another common modular cleanroom application is the environmental room.  As mentioned earlier, Starrco cleanrooms are known for their versatility… and this is especially beneficial for controlling all types of environmental factors.  For example, if you require control of meteorological conditions like humidity and temperature, Starrco can apply a variety of products to produce a fully-functional environment.  So no matter what the stipulation, a modular cleanroom allows you to simulate a multitude of environmental factors.

Animal Housing Labs

For quite some time now, there has been a need for facility solutions for laboratory animals.  There are a number of factors included in maximizing the efficiency of these spaces, including square footage, sanitation and noise control.  Starrco modular cleanrooms accommodate these needs with specific designs to ensure a stress-free laboratory environment.  The components of our cleanrooms allow for controlled air flow, pressure and many other conditions.

Other features include:

  • Specifically designed filtration systems
  • Lighting regulation, HVAC, noise and vibration control
  • Anti-vermin measures

As with all of our modular products, Starrco modular cleanroom materials, in all applications, are pre-cut, mitered and completely finished.  This allows for a quick installation with minimal mess, dust and disruption. Our cleanrooms also have the capability to be modified or moved as your organization expands.

In closing, the aforementioned list of applications is a small preview to our modular cleanroom capabilities.  Look forward to our next post, where we will explain the features of additional cleanroom applications and their associated benefits.
